BUCKHORN MOUNTAIN VIA MARMOT PASS

Mile:13.5
Highest Point: 6,988 ft.

Directions: From Quilcene, drive south on US Highway 101 (paved). At 1.4 miles branch right onto Penny Creek Road (paved) and follow it 1.4 miles to the Big Quilcene River Road. Stay left and travel 3.0 miles on the Big Quilcene River Road (gravel) where it becomes FS 27 (paved). Continue on FS 27 to FS 2750 at 6.1 miles. Branch to the left onto FS 2750 (gravel) and follow it 4.6 miles to Wet Weather Creek and the trailhead on the right. A Northwest Forest Pass is required to park at the trailhead. Trail Information: Be prepared for blow downs and snow and water on the trail. The trail to Shelter Rock Camp (elevation 3,650 feet) at 2.6 miles is in excellent condition and the Quilcene River seems to be quite full here. There were no campers at Shelter Rock Camp. A bench spanning the width between two trees is the only furniture provided. As the trail ascends, the unnamed 6,852 foot peak to the southwest is prominent. Camp Mystery (elevation 5,400 feet) at 4.6 miles is completely melted out and there is sufficient water available from the nearby creek. I counted six tents between Camp Mystery and Marmot Pass at 5.3 miles and 6,000 feet elevation. From the pass I headed due north on the Tubal Cain Mine Trail #840 and followed the path briefly before branching to the right onto a way trail leading uphill. This way trail is not on Custom Correct Maps. The path is easy to follow and is quite steep in places as it switch-backs to the first high-point. From here, follow the path as it drops northeast to a saddle between the high point and the summit of Buckhorn. The scramble to the summit is quite easy, occasionally requiring the usage of your hands. Buckhorn Mountain has two distinct peaks, the tallest being the one you are standing on at 6,988 feet. The second peak to the northeast stands at 6,956 feet. From the summit, numerous landmarks are distinguishable including Mount Constance to the south, the Needles to the west and the Gray Wolf Ridge to the northwest. Buckhorn Lake can be located to the northeast in the valley where Copper Creek flows.
